What to do on a cold winter’s day in the Wimmera Mallee
There’s no hiding that winter in the Wimmera Mallee can be chilly; it is desert country after all. But that doesn’t mean the fun stops once the temp drops. There are plenty of things to do to either escape or embrace the cold in the winter months.
Indulge in some retail therapy
Who doesn’t love a bit of retail therapy to help with the winter chills? The Wimmera Mallee is bursting with incredible shopping options to hit the spot. From eclectic gift stores and stunning homewares, to fashion boutiques, vintage shopping and local produce, you won’t be leaving empty handed. Find some of our favourite shops to hit here.
Head to the movies
Going to ‘the pictures’ has been a staple activity for a while now, and it’s never quite gone out of fashion. All of the cinemas in the Wimmera Mallee have been around for some time. With some TLC and some modern upgrades, the cinemas are a perfect way to escape the cold and embrace a bit of nostalgia. From new releases to vintage throwbacks, a day at the movies won’t disappoint. Whether you’re off on a date, or just taking the kids for some indoor entertainment, you’re sure to be pleasantly surprised with this choice. Some of our favourites are the art deco Rex Theatre in Charlton, the Nhill Cinema and the Centre Cinema Horsham are all great picks.
Drive the Silo Art Trail
The Silo Art Trail is undoubtedly a favourite. It’s a great way to explore the region by road – and the best part, it doesn’t matter the weather. Whilst it’s claim to fame is the Largest Outdoor Gallery, don’t let being outdoors in the chill deter you. Much of the journey is inside your own car, making it easy to stay cozy despite the weather outside. We also think that the mega-murals look just as stunning surrounded by storm clouds. No matter the temperature, this is a perfect way to explore the Wimmera Mallee and witness incredible pieces of art painted by world renowned artists. Find it here.
Take a camping trip
We know what you’re thinking – it’s freezing! But, we’re of the opinion that the colder climate can sometimes make a camping trip all the better. There’s nothing quite like curling up next to the bonfire, rugged up from head to toe in your winter warmers and toasting a marshmallow. From stunning lakeside camping spots to picturesque national parks, the Wimmera Mallee has some of the best camp sites in the state. Take some time-out to soak in the surrounding nature and star-gaze to your hearts’ content. Find some of our favourite camping spots here.
