Only in the Wimmera Mallee: Museums, Makers and Unexpected Discoveries

The Stick Shed. One of the Wimmera Mallee's museums

Some attractions could only exist in the Wimmera Mallee.

They’re born from big skies, even bigger ideas and communities that have always found creative ways to tell their stories. Here, you’ll find a World War II grain store so vast it’s nicknamed the Cathedral of the Wimmera, a sculpture garden filled with creations forged from scrap metal, museums preserving generations of agricultural innovation, and even miniature goats winning hearts in a country town.

Located between Melbourne and Adelaide, the Wimmera Mallee is known for its wide-open spaces and friendly communities, but it’s also home to some of Victoria’s most unusual attractions. The region’s major towns include Horsham, Dimboola, Nhill, Murtoa, Warracknabeal, Charlton, Sea Lake, Hopetoun and Harrow, each offering experiences that reflect the character and history of this unique part of Australia.
If you’re looking for hidden gems, quirky attractions and fascinating museums in regional Victoria, start here.

The Stick Shed, Murtoa

Standing inside The Stick Shed for the first time is something you’ll never forget.
Built during World War II as emergency grain storage, this enormous timber structure stretches almost 300 metres in length and is one of only a handful of its kind remaining in Australia. Hundreds of towering mountain ash poles create an almost cathedral-like atmosphere, earning it the nickname “The Cathedral of the Wimmera”.

Hidden in the farming town of Murtoa, The Stick Shed is a remarkable reminder of the region’s grain-growing heritage and one of Victoria’s most impressive engineering achievements.

Wheatlands Agricultural Museum

The story of the Wimmera Mallee is closely tied to the land, and the Wheatlands Agricultural Museum brings that story to life.
Packed with historic machinery, tractors, harvesters and farming equipment, the museum showcases the innovation and determination that helped transform the region into one of Australia’s most productive agricultural areas.

Whether you’re interested in farming history or simply curious about the industries that shaped the landscape, it’s a fascinating glimpse into life in regional Victoria.

Harrow Discovery Centre and Johnny Mullagh Interpretive Centre

Australia’s sporting history holds few stories as remarkable as that of Johnny Mullagh.
Located in Victoria’s oldest inland town, the Harrow Discovery Centre and Johnny Mullagh Interpretive Centre celebrates the life of the Aboriginal cricketer who captained Australia’s first international cricket team and became one of the country’s earliest sporting heroes.

Through engaging displays and local storytelling, visitors can discover both the history of Harrow and the enduring legacy of a man whose achievements deserve far greater recognition.

Charlton Golden Grains Museum

Every town has stories. Charlton has an entire museum dedicated to preserving them.
The Golden Grains Museum offers visitors a window into the lives of the people who built communities across the Mallee. From farming equipment and household items to photographs and local memorabilia, the collection captures the resilience, ingenuity and community spirit that have long defined country Victoria.
It’s the kind of place where history feels personal and every exhibit reveals another layer of the region’s identity.

Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre

You might not expect one of regional Victoria’s most fascinating aviation stories to be found in Nhill, but that’s exactly what makes it worth discovering.
The Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre tells the story of the town’s role in the Empire Air Training Scheme during World War II. Through artefacts, displays and personal accounts, visitors gain insight into the thousands of airmen who trained across Australia and the local community that supported them.

It’s an attraction that consistently surprises visitors and offers a unique perspective on Australia’s wartime history.

Trickbots Metal Art and Sculpture Garden

Creativity takes many forms in the Wimmera Mallee.
At Trickbots Metal Art and Sculpture Garden, discarded metal is transformed into extraordinary works of art. Wander through the collection and you’ll discover animals, characters and imaginative sculptures crafted from recycled materials, each showcasing remarkable skill and creativity.

It’s quirky, unexpected and exactly the kind of attraction that reminds you why exploring regional Australia is so rewarding.

Tiny Goats and Co, Dimboola

Not every memorable experience needs a museum.
At Tiny Goats and Co in Dimboola, visitors can spend time with friendly miniature goats and enjoy a hands-on farm experience that brings smiles to children and adults alike.
It’s a chance to slow down, connect with the countryside and experience a side of the Wimmera Mallee that simply can’t be replicated in the city.
