Wiregrass Heritage Trail
Step into the mythical world of Wiregrass and discover the place and stories that inspired one of Australia’s most celebrated cartoonists, Percy Leason.
Leason drew on his childhood memories to create his famous Wiregrass cartoons, capturing the humour, resilience and everyday life of rural Australia during the 1920s and 1930s. His cartoons reflect a time of remarkable change, as motor cars arrived on dusty roads, electricity transformed homes and businesses, and communities navigated drought, the Great Depression and changing social attitudes.
Embark on a guided interactive walking tour, led by local volunteers. You can also choose to do a self-guided Wiregrass Heritage Trail. The trail features a permanent exhibition at the Kaniva Visitor Information Centre, a large-scale post office mural and interpretive panels throughout the town centre.
Follow the trail along both sides of Commercial Street, from the historic Commercial Hotel and Windmill Corner to the Kaniva Shire Hall, built in 1928, and discover the stories behind the cartoons and the town that inspired them.
Trail distance is approximately 450 metres and takes around 45 minutes. Guided tours are available by arrangement, and the trail is suitable for families, school groups and small groups.
