Overland Museum

The Overland Museum is a privately owned, not-for-profit museum dedicated to preserving the history of one of Australia’s most iconic passenger trains. The Overland first commenced operation in 1887 and, with almost 130 years of service, is one of the country’s oldest interstate rail journeys.

The museum celebrates the rich heritage of The Overland through a carefully curated collection of artefacts, photographs and memorabilia. A highlight of the collection is a fully restored 1951-built sleeping carriage, housed undercover, allowing visitors to step inside and experience a piece of Australia’s rail history. Other items in the collection date back as early as 1909, offering insight into the evolution of interstate rail travel.

The Overland Museum is self-funded and operated independently, relying on the generosity of individuals and organisations who donate artefacts, archival material and financial support. The museum has also received assistance from kindred organisations, including the National Railway Museum in Port Adelaide.
Through community support and shared passion for railway heritage, The Overland Museum preserves and shares an important chapter of Australia’s transport history for future generations to enjoy.
