SUMMARY:Her view: landscapes from the collection
DESCRIPTION:Does a landscape change depending on who is looking? \nThe exhibition Her view comprises paintings and photographs from the Horsham Regional Art Gallery collection that depict the Wimmera\, Gariwerd and surrounding Country through the eyes of women artists. \nArtists bring their own understandings\, experiences and emotional resonances to the landscapes they encounter\, shaping what people\, as viewers\, see. The works in Her view reveal the world around them\, shaped by the memories\, cultures and activities of women artists. Here\, land is not simply a view\, but a place continually seen\, used\, altered\, marked and reimagined. \nIn the adjoining exhibition space\, the Gallery has presented View from here: Highlights from the National Gallery collection\, an exhibition of significant early colonial views of our local landscapes drawn from the National Gallery of Australia’s vast collection. On display at the Gallery for the past two years\, View from here comprises works exclusively by male artists\, reflecting the colonial perspectives of a particular time and place\, and the land’s potential\, uniqueness and otherness. \nHer view offers another perspective. It acknowledges that landscape is neither static nor untouched: it is lived in\, worked on\, remembered\, changed and culturally understood. Before View from here closes and the works return to Canberra in February 2027\, Her view invites you to look at the country around you through the eyes of women artists. \n  \n\nOrganised by Horsham Rural City Council

SUMMARY:Homo faber: the constructed world
DESCRIPTION:Homo faber: the constructed world explores the Horsham Regional Art Gallery collection through the eyes of artist\, Paul Blackman. \nAfter being set loose in the Gallery’s collection store\, Blackman has selected a number of works that resonate with his own practice and create a dialogue between his work and the Gallery’s collection. \nPresented alongside Blackman’s solo exhibition: the difference between here and there\, this collection display includes photography\, painting\, sculpture and drawing. Blackman is captivated by the world we have built and made. Modernism taught us that a thing’s function dictates its form. Often\, even the seemingly mundane or overlooked everyday object can embody a kind of beauty\, exuding reverence through its shapes\, forms and geometry. \nHomo faber\, a Latin phrase meaning man the maker\, was used by philosopher Hannah Arendt to describe human labour and the creation of the artificial world. Henri Bergson similarly applied the term to explain how human intelligence is moulded by tool-making and manipulating matter. These philosophical insights offer a broad perspective through which both Blackman’s own work and the selected artworks on display can be interpreted. \n  \n\nOrganised by Horsham Rural City Council

SUMMARY:Paul Blackman: The difference between here and there
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the shapes and forms found in the rural industries of the Wimmera and Mallee\, The difference between here and there explores the possibilities that exist between virtual realities and the physical world. \nUsing virtual reality as a studio space\, Paul Blackman constructs vast architectural worlds that range from the industrial to the theatrical. Working within these limitless digital landscapes\, he creates sculptures and structures that exist only in virtual reality before documenting them through photography. \nPresented as arrangements of photographic images and text\, the resulting works trace a journey from the virtual to the physical. What began as an immersive digital experience is now transformed within the gallery setting into a series of patterns and correlations\, inviting the viewer to consider both the images themselves and the spaces that separate and connect them. \nAt once expansive and intimate\, Blackman’s work reflects on perception\, memory and imagination\, suggesting that multiple realities can coexist within the same space and time. From immense virtual environments to the smallest intervals between images\, the exhibition reveals a world shaped by relationships\, detail and continual transformation\, where the difference between here and there becomes increasingly difficult to define. \n  \n\nOrganised by Horsham Rural City Council

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the opening of three new exhibitions at Horsham Regional Art Gallery. \nThe Difference Between Here and There presents new work by local artist\, Paul Blackman. SUMMARY:The Mack Jost Gift
DESCRIPTION:Horsham Regional Art Gallery is pleased to exhibit the Mack Jost Gift\, a selection of works drawn from over 250 works donated to the Horsham Regional Art Gallery collection by Australian concert pianist Mack Jost (pronounced ‘yost’) AM (1918-2000). Jost’s legacy tells a nationally significant story of private benefaction supporting regional Australia and is an important element in the story of art and culture in the Wimmera. His generosity served our region and propelled forward the development of the art gallery. \nThe Horsham Regional Art Gallery collection was then established in 1972. Eight years later\, Horsham-born Mack Jost approached Council and Gallery staff with the proposal of a significant series of gifts to the collection; he offered to gift his private collection of Australian paintings and works on paper to the Horsham collection\, as a series of donations during his lifetime and culminating in a significant bequest. Jost selected Horsham to commemorate his family’s long association with the Wimmera\, having been born in Horsham in 1918\, and his father Conrad Henry Jost was a farmer on land outside of Horsham for several decades. From then\, Jost progressively donated his personal art collection of over 250 works by significant Australian artists from the colonial and modern eras\, culminating in the final bequest after his death in 2000. \n  \n\nOrganised by Horsham Rural City Council
